Special Events

At A-Soc all our events are special. We are committed to making each event unique and interesting for our members. Some events however are in a whole category of their own. Because of this we have a dedicated committee member elected to manage them.

Rationalist Week

Rationalist Week 2008 The flagship event of each year is our week long awareness event, Rationalist Week. Every year we do something bigger and bigger - this year we managed a total of 22 events, 13 talks, 6 video screenings, 4 socials, 5 debates and round tables and lots more. During the week we talk to thousands of people about what we believe and the society in an attempt to encourage free thinking and the idea that you should question everything. More information can be found here.

Darwin Day

Rationalist Week 2008 Charles Darwin was a brave man. He was a true free thinker. Despite the fact that what he was observing contradicted his Christian beliefs about the world he followed the ideals of science and published his theory of evolution by natural selection. For this reason we celebrate the anniversary of his birth each year with talks, stalls and socials. 2009 will be a big 200th anniversary celebration.

Unbaptism

Baptised as a child? Many people were and have since lost their faith and no longer want to be baptised. This is important because the Church of England use baptism figures to work out their membership base and as a result is is overinflated by those who have been baptised and since left the church. Therefore we carry out an annual unbaptism in which you can under go a short ceremony to renounce your baptism complete with certificate too.

Atheist Week

Rationalist Week 2008 Atheist Week was our flagship event of the 2007/2008 academic year taking a similar format to Rationalist Week but not on quite such a scale. We took over the Riley Smith Hall with a series of displays and talks as well as an event every evening including our popular seance to investigate the claims that there is some truth in the idea. Suprisingly enough, we found there wasn't. See the Atheist Week page for more information.
