Tuesday nights
Leeds A-Soc is a very active society. We generally hold at least four events per week and keep these rolling all year round. At the heart of our activities are our Tuesday night meetings. This provides us with a regular meet up point at which members can meet and catch-up in the meeting itself or in the pub afterwards.
What goes on at meetings?
A lot of people often ask, "so do you just sit around going 'yeah - there's no god'?" Of couse the answer is no, we do a lot more than this. But we don't tend to see that as a bad thing as it leaves more time for drinking ;). Our events are actually packed with exciting and challenging content though, as detailed below.
Talks
Talks are regularly delived both by guest speakers and by society members - you're very much encouraged to present a talk if you have something you would like to talk about! These are usually on religion, matters affecting atheists or topics we think our members will be interested in. Some of our talks are available both in the video library on this site and on YouTube as well as the slides being made available in the talks and presentations section of the website.
Debates
We hold a mix of formal and round table debates throughout the year on a variety of topics, usually those as to which there is split opinion on within the society for example Humanism, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, abortion and other big issues. We do some debates with other societies such as the Christian Union though our Tuesday night debates tend to be internal with members making up both the proposition and opposition - a great way to see both sides of the argument.
Film screenings
We regularly screen films and documentaries that are of interest to our members. These take the form of both educational documentaries such as Jesus Camp and The God Who Wasn't There but can also be more lighthearted affairs such as Monty Python's The Life of Brian or Dogma. After the screening there is usually a short discussion on the film so that people can voice their opinion on what they have just watched.
Find out more
This is just a taste of what we do at our Tuesday night meetings. But there is far more to discover! Take a glance at the
events timetable to see what events we have coming up in the near future. We are also at the pub after every Tuesday night meeting so why not come down for a drink and chat to a
committee member about what we get up to.
