Rationalist Week

Rationalist Week 2008 will be happening 14 April to 18 April. This year's events promises to be bigger and better than ever being the biggest week of events A-Soc has ever put on. It will be following last year's format with talks and debates throughout the day and in the evening.

Events

We will have a tent opposite the union which will be open from 11ish each day until 5ish. This will have some displays about Atheism as well as plenty of people to chat and discuss your views with. We will also be holding various talks at 12 noon and 2pm each day in the tent. Come in for some free food and drink and good conversation.

We will also be holding various events at 7:30pm in the evening too. These will be held in Parkinson Building or in the union. See the timetable below for all the events that we will be running.

A-Soc president Chris Worfolk will be providing a quick introduction to the week's events followed by a talk by Norman Ralph on what rationalism is.
14:00 Why be a secular believer?
Being an atheist is amazing. Knowing that this life is the one life we do have and wanting to make the most of it is so much better than moping around waiting for the next one.
16:00 Games afternoon
Come down and play some board games - Monopoly, Connect 4, Boggle, Chess, whatever we can get our hands on! Have a care free afternoon playing some games.
19:00 Life of Brian
Screening of the legendary Monty Python movie. "He is the son of God... our Messiah. King of the Jews." "And that's Capricorn, is it?"

What is Humanism? What is it about? What does it mean to be a Humanist? All will be explained in this talk.
14:00 A History of Atheism
Many of history's most notable characters have been free-thinking atheists. This talk looks at how atheism came to where it is today and the historical figures who dared to think differently.
16:00 Cartoons
Another fun afternoon of light entertainment. We'll be screening a few selected topical episode of The Simpsons, God, The Devil & Bob, maybe some South Park, etc.
19:00 Mike Lake
President of the Derbyshire Secularists & Humanists Society will be giving a talk on a to be confirmed topic.

12:00 Ask an Atheist
Have a burning question like "how can you not believe in God?" or "you know you're going to hell right?" Then come along to this Q and A session and ask an Atheist!
14:00 What's wrong with agnostisism?
Dr. Gijsbert Stoet explains the problems with being an agnostic.
16:00 Pub quiz
Everyone loves a pub quiz, even if it's not in the pub. So grab some friends (or come down and make some new ones!) and enter the quiz.
19:00 Debate with Christian Union
Formal debate between A-Soc and the Christion Union on the resurrection.

Not sure quite how evolution works? Have a burning question about the details of it? This talk and Q&A session should give you some answers.
14:00 One Life
How do we make the most of the one life we do have? This talk is connected to the One Life course and looks at things like the meaning of life, truth in beauty and other topics covered on the course.
16:00 Speakers' Corner
We're all about the freethought afterall so come down, grab the mic and have your say!
19:00 Why FSM? Debate
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster will be presenting their case as to why the FSM is the one true god in this debate against A-Soc.

12:00 Where do Atheists get their morals?
If Atheists don't believe in the Bible, where do they get their morals from? As we explain, this view is misguided and indeed Atheists are often more moral than theists.
14:00 Was Jesus an atheist?
Jesus cast off religion and preached the ethics of Humanism. So was he actually an atheist?
16:00 Video games
Come down and relax with some video gaming on the big screen. We'll have a variety of consoles and games for people to battle against each other with.
19:00 Student stories
Here the personal stories of students and why they have found themselves on the path to heathenism.
21:00 All night debate
We'll be open all night for a debate or just a chat as well as serving food and drink all night. Head over for a free hot drink after Fruity.
