A society for atheists, rationalists, secularists and humanists
Today is the last day of Rationalist Week 2009.
For those that have missed the festivities so far, there are still plenty of events left for you to attend. Today's line up looks like this:
12noon - Where do atheists get their morals?
2pm - How to have better sex
4pm - Breaking the superstitions
7pm - Mike Lake on Active Atheists
9pm - Student Stories
10pm - All night debate
As you can see, there is still plenty of things to get excited about.
I am sure that those involved with Rationalist Week will be sharing their views and stories with you on the blog in the coming week, but I would just like to mention a few of my personal highlights.
The highlight of the week for me was our inaugural debate with the Islamic Society. Debating the merits of theism versus atheism, we managed to explore the ideas of infinity and an unlimited universe. Unfortunately, the Islamic speaker sank to personal insult and offence as the arguments escaped him. The event was a success thougha nd was attended by RW '09s first capacity crowd.
Other highlights included the CU debate, fast becoming an annual tradition of Rationalist Weeks, and the numerous live bands throughout the week.
So, Nicola, Zoltan and myself did the first night shift of Rationalist Week 2009.
It was bloody amazing! Had some drunk guys turn up at 3:30am, one was a strong atheist and the other apathetic!
We thought Zoltan got kidnapped but he turned up with chips after about an hour!
We did a stock check and thought the potatoes had multiplied by about 20!
We're very tired and going a bit do lally!!
And Nicola submitted her manifesto for Interfaith Assembly Chair!! Vote for Nicola .. because she's simply amazing ;)
YAY!!
First of all the provisional timetable for Rationalist Week 2008 is now online! This will probably change a bit as we haven't got into the full swing of planning meetings with the whole society yet but we have a complete timetable provisionally (not all of it has been announced yet).
Along those lines, our first guest speaker, Mike Lake has now be confirmed. Anyone who was here last year will remember Mike gave a fantastic talk back in April so it's great news he has agreed to come up once more.
More details will hopefully be coming soon. We will be having a meeting before the end of term for people wanting to get involved and if anyone is around over Easter there will be some planning meetings too.
I'm pleased to announce the date for Rationalist Week 2008 has now been set - 14 April to 18 April which is the first week back after Easter! It should be another amazing week and a fantastic opportunity to get involved with the society.
Having finally got round to processing some more of the videos from Rationalist Week, new videos are now available in the video section to watch. Enjoy!
Thank you so much to everyone who helped out with Rationalist Week! Thanks to the contributions of everyone in both time and resources the week was an amazing success for the society.
I think we learned a lot from running the event next year and will be having a meeting about what went well and what didn't sometime in the future.
Things are starting to come together for Rationalist Week. We've been busy planning, ordering and buying things and more exciting, things are starting to turn up.
I've just had an email letting me know that they have dispatched the megaphone so that should be here on Monday we should have a lot of other stuff arriving next week too.
The downside being that currently I have 12 stackable chairs and 3 tables in my room. It's a good job I have a fair bit of space!
