Rationalist Week 2007

The details have been unveiled – Rationalist Week 2007 is on! Check out the page for a full timetable of events (or at least our provisional timetable for events), there are plenty of them.

We’re planning to hold somewhere in the region of a dozen events during the week including the much anticipated debate with the Christian Union.

We’re listed on LUU Online

Well, almost. We’re not in the A to Z list for some reason but if you go to the faith and culture section you can now find us listed. Or just follow the link to our page :) .

New blog, improved website

I’ve been working hard on improving the website. Notably a new blog – this one is just within the Leeds sub-domain and integrated with the rest of our site. All the posts have been ported over.

Recently I’ve also added web links section, a documents section, some streaming videos and a media coverage section.

Launch party

I’d just like to thank everyone who came down to the launch party last night. We got a good number of people who were interested on the society and we didn’t trash the place so we got our deposit back and everything ;) .

Societies fair

On Saturday I discovered that there was a societies fair running today and tomorrow. Without any chance to sort anything out given nobody would be around over the weekend and I was working both days anyway it presented somewhat of a tricky situation. Luckily, thanks to me just randomly turning up we managed to get a table and promoting the society.

I say randomly, some planning went into it. I went to all the effort of buying some canes on Sunday and transporting them over to uni Sunday night (technically Monday morning) only to find when I got there that canes were being provided. After getting a little under four hours sleep I set forth and arrived in time to grab a table next to Mr. O’Shea’s recently formed Jazz & Blues Society.

We got some quite good interest in the society. Nothing major but a handful of mailing list sign-ups and some paid members too which is good as I wasn

Launch party draws near

It’s hard to believe it’s only three days until the launch party. As ever we are rushing round at the last minute trying to organise things (sign of not being as well prepared as possible but don’t pretend you would be any more prepared :p). We’ve started to heavily promote it though so hopefully we should get a decent enough turn out. Make sure you’re there!

We’re on ShoutLife

I was reading over the Web 2.0 blogs I read and came across ShoutLife which is basically a Christian version of MySpace. They have a space for organisations to sign up so I though I would register the society :D . Our public profile is pretty bland at the moment but I like to think it’s amusing none the less.

Post Chrismukka update

It’s been a while since anything has happened given that there was little point doing things over Chrismukka with most people not being in Leeds. Now we’re back in the swing of things, the society can start rolling forward again. I’m going down to events tomorrow to sort things out for the launch party which hopefully should be sorted fairly soon.

I haven’t heard back on the state of our block bookings yet (and film making society have which is a little unnerving) not finance so I need to chase those issues up as well. Once they are in place we can start putting together a schedule for this coming semester.

First emails

The first emails have arrived in the society inbox! The honour of the first email goes to George who gave me a heads up that the site has only been up for a few weeks and is already broken :D . Still that issue is solved now so people can actually sign up to the mailing list once again. And indeed a few people have. Not many but given I haven’t really driven into promotion mode yet I think it’s a good sign that the site isn’t a ghost town.

Speaking of not being a ghost town, that last line got me thinking about traffic so I checked the web stats for the site and while visitors are not in the mega numbers we are getting traffic from the search engines for people searching for the society. It’s all kicking off!

The second email I got was from someone named Kate who claimed to be from the ITV. I am always really suspicious of this type of communication but the email seems to originate from an ITV mail server. I’m worried my phone has died again though as it wasn’t making any sound when I tried to phone them. But yeah, it’s all very exciting. I mean, how did they hear about us already? Seriously the promotion so far has been one poster in the union.

First societies assembly

I went to the first faith and cultural societies assembly today. Attendance was a little better than expected with about 12-15 of us there (compared to the 8 last time according to Craig and 2 at the last general interest assembly according to Jess) and I picked up some interesting tips about the funding forms and such so it’s all good. I’ve also done the block bookings form and we have put together a budget too which is all ready to submit tomorrow.
