Things that are happening

Hmm, need to improve my titles I think lol.

I feel it’s time for a quick blog post. First of all the second part of Richard Dawkins’ documentary “Enemies of Reason” is on Channel 4, well, now ;) .

Secondly lots of things are happening in preparation for September. Most notably we’ve started to list events for next year on the events page.

We will also be posting a lot more details on what is going on`soon so keep your eyes pealed to the website.

A summer update

I haven’t posted in a while so I just thought I would make a quick post and say what is going on at the moment.

Our activities have mostly halted for the moment but hehind the scenes we are preparing for the start of next year.

We are also considering throwing together some socials over the summer so that those of us that are still in Leeds have something to do.

New committee page is live

The committee page needed a bit of a overhaul I felt so it’s been redesigned to look prettier and also provide more information. It’s been sitting around for a week or so while it gets tweaked but it’s finally live on the site now.

Meeting minutes

With Norm having taken over as secretary and doing an excellent job too we are now implementing minutes for the meetings (that we actually minute) being available online.

I’m still playing around with the style and how we are going to do it but the minutes from our last meeting are now available online.

How many of us are there out there?

I was speaking to Craig at the Christian Union lunch bar yesterday who claimed there was significantly less than a few million people in the world that called themselves atheist.

I ended up looking up coming over some statistics will looking for some statistics on Humanism which make for interesting reading. Adherents.com which seems to be the de facto standard for religious stats put the figure at “200 to 240 million.”

World Almanac put the number at 205 million. I couldn’t find the page on Encyclopaedia Britannica but depending on what figures you believe thet put the number somewhere between 40 and 150 million.

Meanwhile Landover Baptist Church puts the number at 300 ;) .

Riley’s nominations

We’ve been nominated for a Riley award! I’m actually disappointed, we were put forward for three but were only shortlisted for one of them. I’ve appealed against one of the decisions though, I mean losing our to product design society – what is that about?!?

The awards take place this Friday so we’ll have to see what happens.

EGM results

Congratulations to Norm for being elected secretary and Sarann for being elected social secretary!

Next year we will hopefully be able to do a whole lot more than we have this year (not that our schedule wasn’t packed this year!) so be prepared for a kick-ass first semester in September.

Rationalist Week round-up

Thank you so much to everyone who helped out with Rationalist Week! Thanks to the contributions of everyone in both time and resources the week was an amazing success for the society.

I think we learned a lot from running the event next year and will be having a meeting about what went well and what didn’t sometime in the future.
